Balancing Pressure with Diplomacy: U.S. Strategy with Iran at a Critical Juncture
Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering is one of our nation's most successful career diplomats of all times, a leading figure in U.S. diplomacy for over four decades. In a diplomatic career with service in each of the major continents, Ambassador Pickering reached the rank of Career Ambassador, the highest in the U.S. Foreign Service. He retired from the State Department as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. Joining Ambassador Pickering will be Jessica Tuchman Mathews who serves as the President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Both speakers serve on The Iran Project, an independent non-government entity that seeks to improve official contacts between the United States and Iranian governments. For nearly a decade The Iran Project's methodology has aimed to reduce misunderstandings between Iran and the U.S. by establishing ongoing informal dialogues with Iranian counterparts, and to inform senior U.S. Government officials and members of Congress on the content of their talks.
