Too Many Sopranos: a comic opera by Edwin Penhorwood

Too Many Sopranos is a comic opera in English by Toledo native and Indiana University faculty member Edwin Penhorwood. It tells the story of four sopranos who arrive at the gates of Heaven to learn that there is only room for one soprano in the choir. Each represents a traditional operatic "type": the Wagnerian powerhouse, the flirty ingénue, the fiery diva and the grave grand dame. St. Peter tells the sopranos that if there were more tenors and basses in the heavenly choir, all of them would be welcome. The sopranos then journey to Hell to fetch the men and bring them back to Heaven. Too Many Sopranos will feature a cast of 11 central Ohio singers directed by OPC Artistic Director Dione Parker Bennett. The show is family friendly, and a good way to introduce young or new opera fans to the European opera tradition. Seasoned opera aficionados will enjoy Penhorwood's humorous take on operatic tropes and stereotypes....more
