Level of Study: This course is designed for students at all levels of study. Description: Visiting artist Shelby Shadwell will lead this one-day workshop on the press-free process of creating trace monotypes. Monotype is the intersection of drawing, painting, and printmaking. It employs the directness of drawing and painting with the process and materials of printmaking. Popularized in the late 20th century by artists such as Paul Klee and Paul Gauguin, monotype unifies the rick blackness of ink and the hand-drawn expressiveness of the artist's mark. The immediacy of the process allows for multiple prints to be made relatively quickly, permitting a fresh exploration of contour, line, mark, and gesture. Required Supplies: Oil based black relief ink - or another fairly stiff ink Good quality brayer for inking / recharging plates Plates - Plexiglas or other non-absorbent surface cut to a manageable size Paper - medium quality, medium weight drawing paper 60 - 80 lb or good quality paper (example: Rives lightweight) Drawing materials - #2 Pencils - Rubbing objects of various widths - fingers work, but it can be fun to experiment with other marks Rags for cleaning hands and plates Masking tape and Sharpies for registration Newsprint - to put under the plates, to mark out a registration system, etc. Magnesium Carbonate - to adjust the stiffness and viscosity of the ink if necessary...more
