McGuffey Museum

The McGuffey Museum honors William Holmes McGuffey, who compiled the McGuffey Eclectic Readers. McGuffey, a professor of Ancient Languages and Moral Philosophy at Miami University, and his wife, built this two-story brick house in 1833 and lived there until 1836. The Eclectic Readers educated generations of Americans and earned McGuffey the title “Schoolmaster to the Nation.” The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. The Museum collects, preserves, and exhibits materials relating to the life of William Holmes McGuffey and his readers, local and university history, domestic architecture and arts, and the history of literacy and schooling.
