RESIST: A World of Resist Dye Techniques

Sara Hume, Curator Ikat, batik, shibori, tie-dye, kasuri, adire, bandhani… Many different methods, one simple premise: creating patterns using dye.

The exhibition is organized by technique in order to bring together examples from around the globe. While techniques vary widely, they rely on a few basic principles. The dye can be resisted using mechanical means by tying or clamping. Or the resist can be chemical, generally paste or wax.

Resist techniques can be seen in the most expensive and treasured textiles, but also in relatively humble objects. The exhibition will include Indonesian sarongs, Japanese kimonos and futon covers, Guatemalan skirts and sashes, Uzbek robes and Nigerian adire cloth. Also on view will be a beautiful Chanel cape of silk batik from the 1920s and a tie-dyed caftan by Halston.
