Van Wert's Holiday at Home
Van Wert's traditional Fourth of July celebration kicks off with an old-fashioned patriotic parade down Main Street starting at 11 AM. After the parade visitors are invited to the grounds of the Van Wert County Historical Museum (located on North Washington Street) where plans have been made for a commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.
Mary Anna Custis Lee meets her husband, General Robert E. Lee, at an encampment. Civil War re-enactors will be on site and a skirmish between the two at the Battle of Town Creek Foot Bridge is rumored.
A debate between Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis is being scheduled and there will be other guests speakers throughout the day providing their expertise on some aspect of the War.
There will be crafters, music and activities for the youngsters with lunch being provided by the local Rotary Club. Activities will continue at Smiley Park with entertainment and food followed by fireworks at dusk.
