2010 Mount Vernon Ohio Chautauqua & Lyceum Series

The Chautauqua & Lyceum Series…”Spend An Evening With…” is a series that presents a wide range of historical characters in a similar format to that used by the Ohio Chautauqua, including scholars who have been part of that series. Our emphasis is on Ohio History and especially Knox County.  Founded in 2008, the series has grown to average  100 people per program, 75% being elderly and many families with school age children. Some of the characters presented, include: Tecumseh, Katharine Wright, Sojourner Truth, John D. Rockefeller, U.S. Grant, Mozart, Oskar Schindler, Pretty Boy Floyd, Warren Harding, John Brown, Lucille Ball, Buddy Holly, Mary Draper Ingles, Blue Jacket, P.T. Barnum, Corrie ten Boom, Dwight Eisenhower and Clarence Darrow.

In 2010, the series will focus on expanding from 12 programs to 21 with the usual first person historical portrayal and offer new programming that fits thematically, such as lectures and storytelling with special emphasis on Ohio. We are adding the term Lyceum [the forerunner of Chautauqua’s] to capture programming that does not fit the Chautauqua format but encompasses to full theme.

The series has included OHC speakers over the past two years and in 2010 the plan will include contracting with several scholars listed on the OHC Speakers Bureau as well as other scholars from all around Ohio, with a growing number of home grown scholars from the Knox County area.
