Fort Ancient Summer Solstice Sunrise Program
Imagine what it is like to witness a summer solstice sunrise in the exact location the Ancient Ones did 2,000 years ago. This can be repeated annually at the Summer Solstice Sun Rise at Fort Ancient. Standing in front of a specific stone covered mound, people can gaze into the distance and watch the sun rise within a gap in between the earthen walls, signifying the longest day of the year. While the true meaning of such a day may never be known, people gather in amazement to witness the architectural complexity of an alignment between a mound, the earth walls, and the sun. The program ends with the completion of the sunrise. People are encouraged to drive through the grounds and enjoy the morning before leaving.
