Athens County Covered Bridges
Covered bridges are one of the nation’s most treasured architectural achievements, and Athens County is proud to contain three of the Hocking Hills region's eighteen covered bridges.
Popular in the late1800s, covered bridges served two purposes: with appearances similar to barns,it was easy to transport cattle across them; and protecting a bridge’s underpinnings with a roof meant the bridge could stand for seventy or eighty years, as opposed to ten or fifteen.
The back roads of Athens County are home to:
Blackwood Covered Bridge on Blackwood Rd. (Co. Rd. 46). This bridge was built in 1881 and spans Shade Creek.
Kidwell Covered Bridge on Twp. Rd. 332, which spans Sunday Creek.
Palos Covered Bridge on Twp. Rd. 347, also spanning Sunday Creek.
