South Bunker Hill School
A one-room public school built in 1857 and used continuously until 1952. Operated as a public school, the student population predominantly was Amish and Mennonite. Amish parochial education began after these schools consolidated. The original schoolhouse has been restored and furnished, and is open to the public. Tours present both Amish educational program and the role of one-room public education. About 4500 students are enrolled in 150+ Amish schools within the area. Local schools are operated by their own school boards and hire their own teachers. Students attend school grades 1 thru 8, or until age 14. Learning to work thru apprentice programs is the next phase of training for Amish youth. Come learn about Amish education!
