Lake County History Center

The Lake County History Center Museum and Historic Village is an 8-acre complex located minutes from I90 in Painesville Township, about 25 miles east of Cleveland. The Center is comprised of a main museum building, originally built as the Lake County Poor House in 1876. This beautiful Italianate structure has two levels open to the public with exhibit galleries, classrooms and research library rooms available. Exhibits change yearly; current displays can be found on the Society’s website at The library has extensive manuscripts and records of local history. It is open to the public and researching assistance is available. Operated by the Lake County Historical Society, the complex also contains an historic village used for first person interpretation of Ohio’s early years for school field trips and summer visitors. A third area is the special event barn and home of the American Heritage Dinner Theater that produces historic forms of public entertainment such as the medicine show, vaudeville and melodramas. The dinner theater season is August and September. The extensive grounds of the Center are used for special event programs, the Lake County Heritage Festival and other Society sponsored events. All the buildings and grounds are handicapped accessible and parking is readily available.
