MARIETTA, OH (September 4, 2012) – For 37 years, sternwheelers have propelled the thriving riverboat town of Marietta into a bustling hub for entertainers and vendors during the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival. Complete with pageants, paddleboat races and a choreographed fireworks display, the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival is a fun-filled weekend for the entire family.

Sternwheelers have already started to line the levee in preparation for the official start of the 37th Annual Ohio River Sternwheel Festival on Friday, September 7. Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. followed by evening entertainment including Arrival – The Journey Tribute Band and Grammy nominated country artist, David Nail.

“Our phones have been ringing non-stop from visitors wanting information about the Sternwheel Festival,” said Jeri Knowlton, Executive Director of the Marietta-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The Sternwheel Festival committee does an excellent job of scheduling a full weekend of entertainment that everyone can enjoy.”

The Ohio River Sternwheel Festival was established in 1976 to encourage tourism in Marietta and to preserve the riverboat heritage for which Marietta is known. The festival has grown to attract an estimated 100,000 visitors with activities and entertainment lasting throughout the weekend. Highlighted by the Harry J. Robinson Memorial Fireworks Display, the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival is a free, family friendly celebration of riverboat heritage.
