LOUDONVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 29, 2009) – For many years, Loudonville has been Ohio’s Canoe Capital. With the change of seasons, Loudonville is one of the best places in Ohio to enjoy the fall foliage.

"Summers are always great in Loudonville,” said Loudonville-Mohican Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Bob Yun. “But in autumn, the area is transformed into a real-life, giant 3-D painting splashed with every color of the rainbow. To help visitors plan a getaway to enjoy the show, we have again added a new Fall Foliage section on our Web page at www.Loudonville-Mohican.com.”

Web users click a link to the State of Ohio Fall Color Report to get the latest info on the best leaf viewing throughout October.

To experience the beauty of fall foliage in Mohican Country, visitors are invited to spend Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 18 on a self-drive tour through Mohican State Park and Forest. Clear Fork Gorge, the deepest gorge in Ohio, is particularly scenic this time of year.

In addition to the state park, the tour includes a stop at Wolf Creek Pine Run Grist Mill, a walking tour of Loudonville’s quaint Victorian downtown and stops at local historical sites. The self-driving tour includes 22 exciting stops. Fall foliage tour information is available in the Fall Foliage section on www.Loudonville-Mohican.com or by calling (877) 266-4422 toll-free. A self-drive fall foliage tour booklet can be downloaded from the Loudonville Web page under the events section.

Visitors also can experience the autumn beauty by hiking the 45 miles of state park trails, 24 miles of challenging mountain bike trails and nine miles of bridle path. To plan your outdoor adventure, a new Mohican Regional Trail Guide is now available. The guide is printed on tough, rip-stop paper and includes all Mohican and Malabar Farm State Park trails. It is available for only $2.00 through the Loudonville-Mohican Convention and Visitors Bureau and at select local stores.

Why not enjoy the season on horseback? A new horse livery, Two Rivers Trail Rides, opened this year. Two Rivers offer scenic 1- and 1.5-hour horseback riding excursions along the Lake Fork and Mohican Rivers. Riders will see views found no where else in Ohio that will be even more memorable during the autumn.

As many area canoe liveries are open in October, visitors can experience the fall foliage on a leisurely trip down the Mohican River. There are seven liveries from which to choose. River trips can run from 45 minutes to seven hours and longer. Many liveries have overnight camping and cabins. The Visitors Bureau's Web page provides a daily river report and convenient summary of all liveries with hours and river tour lengths.

Enjoy the scenery from the deck of the newly-opened Pathway Bridge. A long-time dream, the striking new structure is located in Riverside and Wally Road Parks downtown. It is the beginning point of the 1.5-mile paved Bicycle Path. The Bicycle Path travels along the river, past the stores and restaurants on South Market Street, ending just north of Mohican State Park.

Fishing anyone? The Clear Fork River is noted for excellent fly fishing. As the river is stocked by the state of Ohio, great fishing abounds. In addition, the river flows through Clear Fork Gorge, a designated National Natural Landmark. At more than 300 feet deep, the gorge hosts towering hemlocks and striking stands of white pine. During autumn, the scenery is spectacular. A newly-released report by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency indicated the Clear Fork Gorge River has "exceptional water quality." Fishing can also be enjoyed at Pleasant Hill and Charles Mill Lake Parks.

Special events also are planned throughout the month. Events include OctoberFest, Saturday, Oct. 3 at the at the Pine Run Wolf Creek Grist Mill; the 121st Loudonville Free Street Fair downtown, Oct. 6 - 10; 2nd Annual Mohican 5K Run / Walk on Sunday, Oct. 18, also downtown; and Omar’s Haunted Trail, Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31 at the Wolf Creek Grist Mill, just south of Loudonville.

“Autumn is a great time to spend the night in the area too,” Yun said. “Overnight guests can spend their fall foliage getaway camping, in a cozy cabins, quaint bed and breakfast, hotel, a deluxe resort and even a luxury castle. In Loudonville, guests can rough it, soak in a whirlpool, enjoy a refreshing massage, take a private carriage ride, relax around a campfire or in front of a fireplace enjoying our spectacular scenery and wildlife."
