LOUDONVILLE, Ohio (July 7, 2009) - The dog days of summer are the perfect time to make some great family memories. As Loudonville is mid-way between Cleveland and Columbus, it is a short trip from anywhere in Ohio to enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of Mohican Country.
"Loudonville has long been regarded as the Canoe Capital of Ohio," Executive Director of the Loudonville-Mohican Convention & Visitors Bureau Bob Yun said. "With seven canoe liveries within minutes of downtown, there are plenty of opportunities for families to 'rough it' on Mohican River trips from just an hour to all day, or even longer. The slow-moving yet scenic river lets guests enjoy nature at their own pace with plenty of time to relax."
The Loudonville-area liveries offer canoes, kayaks, rafts and tubes. The Loudonville Visitors Bureau's
Web site has a river report that provides daily updates on River conditions.
"We are pleased to welcome a new major addition to the area--Two Rivers Trails Rides," Yun said. "Now guests can enjoy our beauty from atop a horse exploring the Lake Fork branch of the Mohican River."
Two River Trail Rides is situated on 250 acres of pristine nature off Wally Road, just south of downtown. Riders can take a one-hour or one-and-a-half-hour tour that traverses the Black Fork River, splashes through natural spring-fed streams and climbs the famous Jacob's Pass to see views found no where else in Ohio. Visitors also can bring their own horses and ride the trails in Mohican State Park and Malabar Farm State Park. Malabar even has an overnight horseman's camp.
Mohican State Park & Forest is 6,000 acres of pure, natural beauty and great outdoor activities. With 45 miles of hiking trails, 12.5 miles of mountain bike trails and nine miles of bridle trails, it is home to Clear Fork Gorge, the deepest gorge in Ohio and a National Natural Landmark. Park guests can also enjoy Big and Little Lyon Falls, the Covered Bridge, the Memorial Shrine dedicated to our fallen soldiers and the Fire Tower. How about go carts, miniature golf, paint ball, even 18-hole golf courses?
Guests also are welcome to stop by Wolf Creek Pine Run Grist Mill, an authentic grist mill, south of town. For area history, visit the Cleo Redd Fisher Museum downtown. While you're downtown explore the Main Street, a Victorian shopping district that tempts visitors with a variety of eclectic shopping choices including art galleries, gift and curio shops. In addition, browse finely crafted keepsake Amish furniture and Native American jewelry and crafts. Many shops are long-time family-owned stores including Raby Hardware and Buzzard's Family Shoes. Nearby Malabar Farm State Park is a working farm that offers tours of the farm and beautiful main house built by author Lewis Bromfield. Just east of Loudonville is Holmes County, home to the largest Amish population in the world.
Many of Loudonville's eateries are downtown where visitors can order everything from a hot dog to prime rib, a reuben, sub, omelet, ice cream and incredible baked goods. Near downtown is fast food, pizza, even a family restaurant with summer weekend breakfast and dinner buffets. Dine in style at the Mohican State Park Resort, the Malabar Inn (near Malabar Farm State Park), and the area's newest restaurant, Stepping Stone at Landoll's Mohican Castle.
"The Loudonville area offers many choices to 'rest your head' from primitive camping, RVing, cozy and deluxe cabins, quaint bed and breakfasts, cottages, hotels, a luxury resort, even a castle," Yun said.
Rough it, soak in a whirlpool, enjoy a refreshing massage, take a private carriage ride, relax around a crackling campfire or in front of a fireplace and enjoy Loudonville's spectacular scenery and wildlife.
"With special-themed overnight packages and discounts such as AAA, AARP, Golden Buckeye and VA/POW military rates, a getaway to Loudonville won't bust the budget."
