MARIETTA, Ohio (June 16, 2008) – The ribbons of highway that run through Southeastern Ohio offer motorcycle enthusiasts an eclectic mix of tranquil rides through the countryside and visits to bustling towns and villages. Hundreds of miles of touring routes (for all skill levels) wind through Washington County, Ohio’s gently rolling hills and valleys. Picturesque byways and breathtaking views of the Ohio River valley may be seen on nearly every horizon.
Four key touring routes are suggested by locals for traversing the region’s roads. Riders are encouraged to use one of the region’s historic B&Bs or hotels as a home base. Each tour consists of a day’s ride that ventures into nearby counties and states, typically between 100–230 miles.
The first route offers a rare look at the covered bridges of Washington County. Ohio ranks second in the nation in the number of covered bridges (approximately 150) that remain standing and open for traffic. Of those that remain, Washington County boasts nine glorious historic bridges that date back to as early as 1832!
This particular route, along portions of Ohio State Route 26, also winds into the majestic Wayne National Forest and along lazy rivers and streams. It’s easy to see why Life Magazine chose SR 26 as one of the Nation’s Top 40 Most Scenic Drives.
The second route leads riders through the heart of Marietta, a town that continues to thrive on its river heritage. A large historic shopping district nudges the banks of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers, featuring locally owned businesses, passed down from generation to generation. Antiques, clothing, specialty shops and restaurants offer a nice break from sitting in the saddle.
After a morning in town, the southern route along the Ohio River National Scenic Byway (Ohio Route 7) and connecting country roads cruising through pristine countryside is the ideal ride to complete the day.
The third route brings travelers through the northwestern edge of Washington County and into neighboring Morgan and Muskingum Counties. Looping around and over, up and down, the route offers views of remote farmland, barns and country churches and stores. On State Route 78 you will savor the Rim of the World view at Miner’s Memorial Park, home of the Big Muskie Bucket.
Travel on to Cumberland, Ohio, home to the Wilds. One of the largest and most innovative wildlife conservation centers in the world, the Wilds’ mission is to advance conservation through science, education, and personal experience. It is home to rare and threatened wildlife from around the world and is open May through October for visitors to tour its grounds by open Safari buses. Everything seems larger at the Wilds — from the rhinos to the wildflowers. A quick ride around portions of Ohio’s third largest lake — Seneca Lake — and another day of riding is complete.
The fourth and final touring route includes crossing over the Ohio River into neighboring West Virginia for a ride down WV Route 14 South to Parkersburg. A stop at Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park allows for a brief departure from riding. Authentic sternwheelers take groups of visitors to the island May through October for an unmatched adventure back in time to the rare opulence of 19th-century American life.
Guided tours are presented by period dressed docents of the once famous home of Margaret and Harman Blennerhassett and the ill fated tale of their connection with Vice President Aaron Burr. Narrated wagon rides of the island grounds are also offered. After returning to the mainland, a ride along US Route 50 East towards Clarksburg, WV, offers a highway drive with rural mountains and scattered valleys of farmland. Interstate 77 North offers a convenient ride back to historic Marietta. Contact the CVB for maps.
