Tourism Makes Significant Impact on Ohio Economy
Economic research shows tourism visitor dollars on the rise; $38 billion industry

Ohio tourism industries are attracting more visitors and revenue to the state than previous years according to 2013 economic impact data released today.

During 2013, Ohio saw about 195 million visits, an increase of 5 million visits from 2012 when Ohio received 190 million visits. Of those visits, 37 million visitors stayed overnight in Ohio last year. Research shows that overnight visitors spend, on average, three times more than day trip visitors.

More visits to Ohio have also yielded more spending in the state. Direct visitor spending in 2013 was estimated at $30 billion, $1 billion more than the previous year. The increase in visitor spending generated approximately $38 billion in sales, up from $36 billion in 2012.

In addition, tourism-related jobs are showing growth. Tourism supports roughly 405,000 Ohio full-time and seasonal jobs, an increase of about 2.5 percent from last year.

“This data further underscores tourism’s economic value to Ohio,” said Mary Cusick, director of TourismOhio. “It’s National Tourism Week which is the perfect time to share our economic impact, and I am encouraged by the positive momentum.”

The research, conducted by Longwoods International and Tourism Economics, allows TourismOhio to track industry performance and gauge visitor trends for the purposes of marketing Ohio’s distinct travel assets. Additional research will be conducted as TourismOhio works with its 11-member Advisory Board and industry partners to brand the state, positioning Ohio for further growth and economic success.
