Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center

Behalt offers fascinating and enjoyable way to learn about the Amish and Mennonite people. Besides a free 15-minute video presentation, visitors may take a 30-minute interpretive tour (paid admission) of a colorful, stunning 265-ft x 10-ft original oil painting depicting Amish and Mennonite history. The presentation is world-class and the facility is handicap accessible and built to accommodate motor coach groups. The mural was painted by German-born, internationally known artist Heinz Gaugel. Other displays highlight heritage aspects of Amish and Mennonites. The Center also has a large selection of books by and about the Amish and Mennonites, local crafts, art gallery, displays, large clean restrooms, and offers group rates. A special exhibit of relief wood carvings display the craftsmanship of local Amish cabinet builder. Pioneer Barn houses an original Conestoga Wagon that brought early settlers to Holmes County. Restored one-room school, dating from 1856, used to tell story of Amish education.
